AJAX for Morons

How to build ajax-powered web applications the easy way

Posted by: Tim Ambler | July 19, 2006

Okay, so maybe that was a little harsh... but it obviously got your attention, didn't it? At one point or another, I know that we all get a little tired of having to put up with the hundreds, no thousands of different "frameworks" that are floating around on the 'net right now that allow us to do all of the cool stuff that makes up what the latest "Web 2.0" rage is all about. SimpleJax is about to fix part of that.

In an effort to make at least one aspect of our lives just that much simpler, I have developed a small new application that I like to call SimpleJax. Basically, SimpleJax is a PHP function that when called, automatically generates all of the nasty JavaScript that is needed to perform complex Client - Server interactions via AJAX.

As I'm sure you're all aware, AJAX is one of the new buzzwords floating around the 'net right now. This not new, yet until recently rarely-used feature of JavaScript enables web developers to create web sites that can communicate with their host servers behind the scenes, without requiring additional feedback from the user. This allows us to create web sites that feel more like applications that we might have installed on our desktops, and less like... well, web sites.

One of the most widely-used examples of AJAX technology is Google Maps (http://maps.google.com), a terrific new tool from Google that allows you to interact with a map and obtain travel directions in a truly interactive manner.
